Pocatello Neighborhood Housing Services officially launched into a new era on April 9 when it made the official announcement that it is now doing business as NeighborWorks® Pocatello. The good news is that the organization will still offer the same great services for Pocatello and Southeast Idaho, but just with a new identity that will position it to better serve its customers with their home buying, home renovation, counseling and education needs.
What many people may have not known is that the organization was chartered by NeighborWorks® America in 1993 and has remained a chartered member and important resource provider to the organization since that time. The mission of NeighborWorks® America, which is similar to that of NeighborWorks® Pocatello is to create opportunities for people to live in affordable homes, improve their lives and strengthen communities.
“Not only are we aligning our name to a national organization that has a great reputation in community development circles around the country, we feel that the new name better encompasses the broad work what we’ve always been doing,“ said Mark Dahlquist, NeighborWorks® Pocatello Executive Director. “Many people think we just build houses, which is a noble thing, but we educate people, we support community organizing, revitalize our neighborhoods and so much more.”
Over the past 21 years, PNHS has rehabilitated 350 homes, facilitated over 600 purchases for first-time homebuyers, constructed 132 single family dwellings and counseled or educated over 6,000 clients. During this same timeframe, PNHS has deployed over $8.5 million in loan funds to the Pocatello-Chubbuck community. All at the same time making positive changes that have uplifted the quality of life of central Pocatello neighborhoods.
“PNHS, or now NeighborWorks® Pocatello, has been extremely fortunate over the past 20 years to align itself with so many talented volunteers and community partners who have helped us create positive change in our neighborhoods,” said Mark Dahlquist, NeighborWorks® Pocatello Executive Director. “We’ve had such a great impact on the community in our relatively short history. Our change of name is certainly exciting and keeps us ahead of the community development curve.”
From the standpoint of providing homeownership services from start to finish, including counseling, education and lending support, there is no other non-profit organization in Southeast Idaho to offer such a comprehensive approach to homeownership. This is in addition to NeighborWorks® Pocatello’s activity in constructing and rehabilitating homes. “We are so much more than simply an affordable housing provider,” Dahlquist said. “We are an affordable housing provider that cares about uplifting the appearance of the community, and creating positive and hopeful attitudes for the clients we serve.”
“It’s going to take a while for us to get used to the new name, but I think the public will quickly become fond of the change. We really feel like what we are embarking upon is going to elevate us to the next level.”
